My reaction was similar. Of course it would be better if the initial statement was 100% correct. If I remember correctly, the value of infinity could be negative or positive depending on the direction from which you approached 8. I've always regarded the concept of 'negative infinity' as a little silly, so I can ignore that for the sake of the joke.
