Heritage Railway

Seen on the South Tynedale Railway in Alston, Cumbria, UK

It's an absolutely lovely little narrow gauge railway built on old standard gauge roadbed.  This area was the home of some very significant lead mines and much of the early rail traffic was built around hauling ore.  The narrow gauge operation has done a very good job of building up a collection of equipment and the facilities to maintain it all.  They have effectivly restored most of the old road bed from Alston to Slaggyford (which is significantly more attractive than the name may sound.)  Take a look at their website and you'll understand why it's worth a visit any time you're in the north of England.

Sadly the lockdowns eliminated their 2020 season and will likely take a big bite out of 2021.  If you're able, a few pounds might help keep them solvent until operations (and tourism in general) can be revived.
