One of my landowners, Sylvan Runkel, was a glider pilot on D-Day. Both of his legs were broken when they skidded into a hedgerow, and then he was wounded by machine gun fire as he crawled out of the wreckage. That was the end of the war for him. He went on to become a forester and naturalist.
